Te Mana O Te Moana: sea turtle guardian and ocean advocate
There is, of course, significant media exposure as well, since passengers flying Air Tahiti Nui have access to information about our organization. This is important because, now that we’re based in Tahiti, we’re increasingly sparking the curiosity of visitors and tourists. It allows us to raise awareness about global climate change through the lens of sea turtles.»
What results have your efforts yielded so far?
« Over the past 20 years, we have:
- Welcomed 150,000 children to our educational center. This is one of our flagship projects. We host schools through programs specifically designed around iconic marine species, not just sea turtles.
- Taken in 680 sick turtles at our care center since it opened.
More than 18 years dedicated to helping turtles in Tetiaroa.
Te Mana O Te Moana key figures:
9,831 tracks in the sand documented.
426 different females were identified, including more than 40 recaptured across two different nesting seasons.
More than 320,000 hatchlings were born.
Approximately 88 eggs per nest with a hatching success rate of 91%.
